Lithium and Depression (Manic and Bipolar Disorder)

The orotic form of lithium is transported directly to the intracellular membranes of mitochondrial, lysosomes and the glia cells. It stabilizes the lysosomal membranes and prevents the enzyme reactions that are responsible for sodium depletion and dehydration effects of other lithium salts making it a far superior source than the pharmaceutical forms of lithium and far safer too. Lithium protects against the shrinkage of the prefrontal cortex and the reductions in glial cell density, which are otherwise seen in bipolar depression. It may provide the growth-promoting support necessary to restore, enhance, and maintain normal synaptic connectivity.

Lithium has been found to be one of the most effective treatments for manic-depressive illness (bi-polar disorder). Normally these patients are given antidepressant drugs which are known to deplete body stores of L-carnitine and Taurine. Recent Lithium Research: Evidence suggests that people with mania or depression may lose brain cells. Lithium may thwart that cell death. A study by Chuang and his colleagues reveals that lithium protects brain cells from being stimulated to death by glutamate, one of the many chemicals that transmit messages in the brain. Their new data suggest that lithium may calm overexcited areas of the brain or, more provocatively, preserve the life of brain (glial) cells whose presence guards against manic depression. It was also reported that it does take a week or two for the neuro-protective effects of lithium to fully take place.

Lithium supplementation shields neurons and intact brains alike against insults as wide-ranging as excessive doses of anticonvulsant medications, deprival of growth factors or essential electrolytes, the Alzheimer’s protein beta amyloid, and neurotoxins like oubain, quinolinic acid, and MPP+. Lithium supplements decrease the number of brain cells killed by experimental strokes by 40%, and help the animals to recover their balance and motility more quickly. Remarkably, most of these benefits can be gained even after the model stroke is over. Lithium supplements also aid brain regeneration in animal models of Huntington’s disease.

Lithium Orotate provides defense against excitotoxicity (the frying of brain cells by over stimulation). It does this through precision modulating of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMA) receptor’s response to the stimulatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate binds to a cell surface protein of the NMDA receptors when it excites a cell. Normally, activation of the NMDA receptor by glutamate triggers an influx of calcium ions, setting off a signaling cascade inside cells. However, cells treated with lithium let in far less calcium when exposed to glutamate. Lithium has a “push/pull” effect on glutamate raising its levels when they are too low and lowering them when they are too high by modulating it reuptake. This balancing act helps to prevent both excessive stimulation (which kills brain cells and inadequate activation of the NMDA receptor which interferes with normal activation and function of nerve cells needed for mood and memory. In people with manic depression, lithium may correct a dysfunction of the NMDA receptor by limiting calcium influx, speculates Chuang.

Lithium Orotate increases levels of the major neuroprotective protein bcl-2 in brain cells. Bcl-2 is a cell survival protein which inhibits cell death in response to a wide range of neurotoxins and cellular stressors, including large doses of cortisol (prednisone), ionizing radiation, free radicals, chemicals that deplete brain cells of the antioxidant reduced glutathione (GSH), and deprivation of crucial brain growth factors. Beyond its abilities to protect brain cells from toxic assault, it’s now emerging that lithium, acting through bcl-2, also helps to regenerate nerve cells, activating a genetic program (the ERK/MAP kinase pathway) that stimulates the growth of new axons and promoting the sprouting of new neurites (the branching “tips” of nerve cells which bridge the gap between neurons).

And perhaps most excitingly of all, lithium inhibits the activity GSK-3, an enzyme, which promotes the formation of the key pathological features of brains under assault by Alzheimer’s disease. GSK-3 is involved in forming the ‘tangles’ that characterize the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. So damping down the activity of GSK-3 would be expected to reduce tangle formation. And in animals given a gene that causes them to overproduce the precursor to the brain-wrecking amyloid beta protein, lithium supplements interfere with the formation of amyloid beta peptides and prevent plaque formation. This has led to the recommendation that the use of lithium in “experimental trials aimed to ameliorate neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease should be considered.”

Neuroregeneration
Lithium Orotate supplementation increases levels of N-acetylaspartate (a marker of brain cell viability and function). But more than that: Researchers have documented increases in grey matter in humans taking lithium supplements for just four weeks – with the largest increases occurring in the hippocampus, a region of the brain crucial for moving short-term memories into long-term storage, and which is the first and most severely-hit area of the brain in victims of Alzheimer’s disease. Importantly, these selective effects were specifically observed in areas where atrophy had previously occurred.

From Dr. Nieper: Lithium Orotate Improves Liver Function

Dr. Nieper points out that “it is not unusual for orthodox medicine to be quite helpless in the treatment of chronic liver ailments, especially chronic immunological liver inflammation. In these chronic liver inflammations…the continued release of lysosomal enzymes plays a role. These are very aggressive, cell-destroying enzymes released by little bubbles in the cell plasma known as lysosomes. These lysosomes exist not so much in the liver cells themselves, as the cells of the liver’s supportive connective tissue. One could attempt to seal the walls of these lysosomal bubbles, to prevent the release of these aggressive enzymes. In fact, a possibility for this exists. It is feasible to release calcium at the lysosome membranes by specifically transporting it there. This can be achieved by means of the special compound, calcium orotate.

In addition, the sodium content in these bubbles – and especially in their walls – must be kept as low as possible, i.e., sodium must be specifically displaced. This can be done by transporting sodium-displacing lithium to these sites using lithium-orotate. Another possibility for removing part of the sodium from the liver is given by the use of Taurine. This is a substance produced by large saltwater fish to remain “sweet” inside, and not as salty as the surrounding seawater.” (Please note any free form amino acid, such as Taurine, must be taken with Vitamin B6 in order to be absorbed efficiently. Why the manufacturers, many of whom know this don’t put B6 into their products confounds me.)

The famous mineral springs of Europe, such as Vichy in France, all have high lithium waters and are in high demand for liver cures. One of its mechanisms of action is displacing sodium with lithium in liver cells. This has the effect of softening the liver and facilitating other medicines into the liver. This form of lithium does not build-up in the blood to dangerous levels as the carbonate, citrate, and acetate forms do. This is simply because it’s absorbed by the cells much more readily than other forms.

Lithium orotate is often used with calcium orotate for high liver enzymes. Clinically we use it for addiction control/withdrawal, depression, headaches, and mania. For normal applications we use 1 tablet 2 – 3x daily, addiction control requires higher doses. Occasionally some patients will experience more fatigue, if so lower the dose.

Lithium Orotate’s role in Heart Disease

“A deficiency of hydrogen and chloride ions in tissues – especially in the heart and in blood vessel walls – increases the risk of cardiac infarction as well as that of hardening of the vessels, arteriosclerosis, kidney damage and high blood pressure, states Dr. Nieper”. He continues: “It is a widely practiced bad habit in orthodox medicine to prescribe diuretics or saluretics to cardiac and blood pressure patients, i.e., medications which increase urine and sodium chloride secretion. In this way the body is further depleted of hydrogen and chloride ions, as well as calcium. This further increases cardiac infarction risk. The use of these agents may shorten the life expectancy of a cardiac patient more than if they were not used at all. This was quite a shock for the followers of orthodox medicine, while metabolic physicians have long been familiar with this situation. It is at least necessary, when using such water eliminating medications, to replace the lost chloride and hydrogen ions. The administration of Taurine and Lithium Orotate, as well as potassium orotate, to improve water secretion is better yet. Even though this disastrous report on the negative side effects of diuretics was published some time ago, the misuse continues unabated, as can be generally observed.

Other Uses of Lithium Orotate

Vision/Eye Health: Dr. Nieper also reported that this form of lithium resulted in improvement in vision and reduction of intraocular pressure in patients with myopia and glaucoma.

Fibromyalgia/Blood Sugar/Graves: There is also some evidence that lithium may help to relieve fibromyalgia and to improve blood sugar metabolism in diabetics; as well, lithium is well-established as a therapy for Graves’ disease.

Hypothyroidism is associated with high antigenic loads such as gluten (already mentioned) iodine, bacterial infections and the heavy metals they bind.

The typical medical response to hypothyroidism is iodine supplementation. In my practice I’ve noticed that clients who have chronic subclinical viral, bacterial or yeast/fungal infections accumulate and retain heavy metals in their bodies. What are some of the causes of a chronic infections and its associated metal retention?

In the case of viruses metal retention occurs due to decreased T cell response from methylation mutation, impaired DNA syntheses, impaired B cell response due to lack of T helper cells, and T regulatory cells. There is an increase in inflammation that masks the virus from being distinguished as non-self. Interferon gamma increases both intestinal and blood-brain permeability. This leads to an increase in the viral load one that the body actually doesn’t respond to at all.

Next the bacteria and/or virus form a partnership with heavy metals as well as one with yeast, fungi and mold. Thus we have the entities yeast-bacteria and yeast-virus that must also be cleared for.

Let’s us an analogy. Say you put a few pieces of paper into the fire place with no kindling to get that big log burning. Is the log likely to catch and start burning? Probable not. It might smoke and smolder a bit, but than it will go out. The smoke that log produces is a gas.

This is similar to what Dr. Wright says happens in the stomach. As we age the amount of HCL that our stomach produces in response to the foods we eat decreases. In order for us to ‘burn up’ the food we need a hot fire. If the fire is not hot enough the food will smolder and produce gas, this is called fermentation or purtrification. It occurs when food is held in the stomach and basically rots.

The gas that is produced tends to push up on the esophagus and sometimes it gets so bad that we experience that acid reflux and regergatation.

Now I’ve found that when I add enzymes with betain HCL in them I increase the fire of digestion and am able to burn the log in my fire without leaving a big smoldering hunk of it that I than have to dispose of by some other means.

Many of you let doctors push you into taking an anti-acids. Why? Because they make you feel stupid when you tell them you don’t want to.

Anti-acids are the common thought form for symptoms like yours, yet they are usually the exact opposite of what would be in your best interests.

Cell membranes are bilayer phospholipid structures. The Swiss scientist Buchi, noted that the actions of the three AEP mineral transporters in Membrane Complex (MC) are localized to the outside of the external cell membrane congregating around pores through which substances pass into and out of our cells. Normally these pores are protected by heavy concentrations of AEP as these act as special gatekeepers at these entrance points.

In most chronic illnesses the target of degeneration is the cell membrane. This is classified as ‘Neurotoxic Membrane Syndrome’ (NMS) and is associated with a myriad of chroncially ill individuals suffering from neurotoxic exposure including patient populations with CFIDS, Fibromyalgia, MS, Autism, Cardiovascular Disase, Depression, Rheumatoid Arthritis, IBS, ALS, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, Heavy Metal Toxicity to name a few.

Membrane Complex is particular indispensable in supporting the condenser (electrical) function of our cell membranes helping to maintain and restore the normal electric cell potential between both sides of the membrane. This produces a sealing affect on the cell membrane that protects it (and us) against unwanted intruders such as antibodies, toxins, viruses and bacteria’s that can only enter the cell through the lipid pores. MC is also effective in transporting essential mineral through the cell wall into the cell.

There are a variety of things that cause the AEP levels to diminish and when they do we are much more vulnerable to attack. As we age and incur disease-related health deterioration we are not able to produce enough AEP to protect our cells. This leaves them open to attack by undesirable chemicals, toxins and infections which can cause or contribute to a wide range of diseases.

AEP salts were first formulated by Dr. Nieper in the 1960’s. He worked with a brilliant biochemist who was able to produce a unique series of what have come to be known as mineral transported. Initially he used Calcium AEP as a successful treatment of multiple sclerosis. It also proved effective at reducing the damaging after effects of viral infections. Other diseases that responded well were allergies, asthma, blood pressure and circulation problems, capillary bleeding, cancer, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, lateral sclerosis (A.L.S.), leukodystrophy and osteoporosis.

Dr. Nieper actually mentions that patients on long-term AEP therapy hardly age, neither outwardly or by some inner criteria. It is calming and harmonizing to the nerves being suitable for neurological conditions, including hyperactivity and anxiety disorders.

An Effective Agent in the Fight against Multiple Sclerosis
In the case of multiple sclerosis, cell membrane damage exists throughout the body, especially in myelin sheaths that surround the central nerve fiber. Dr. Nieper felt that multiple sclerosis is not a neurological disease, but a generalized disease of the cell’s membrane system. It also affects the bone matrix system, the kidneys, the membranes of the pulmonary alveoli, the urinary tract system, the inner linings of little vessels, the membranes of red blood cells as well as many other sites.

After its creation, Dr. Nieper initially used calcium-AEP in treating multiple sclerosis. He says, during a span of 24 years starting in 1964, approx. 2,280 patients were treated with multiple sclerosis, about 800 of them from North America. The results observed over 24 years were good and interesting in many respects and unquestionably better than any other known treatment of MS. Since the positive effect on MS cases was evident around 1966, the German health Authority in Berlin approved the claim labeling “Multiple Sclerosis” on packages and brochures, identifying calcium-AEP.

Using Membrane Integrity in the Fight against Cancer

After evaluating the treatment of several thousand multiple sclerosis patients over many years Dr. Nieper was startled to find that hardly any one of these patients had developed cancer. In a 6-year study of 8 patients with repeated surgery for colon cancer there were no further recurrences with participating in calcium AEP therapy. A report from John Hopkins University states that by using agents that elevate the intracellular calcium level even fast growing metastatic cancer cells are made to undergo programmed cell death. Other carriers, besides AEP, that are able to carry calcium into cells are calcium aspartate and calcium orotate.

Membrane Integrity is Successful in Combating Diabetes

During the late 1960′s and early 1970′s, Dr. Nieper noticed that patients with diabetes obviously felt better when treated with calcium-AEP. Their metabolism and tolerance to sugar improved, and their kidneys appeared to react favorably to this treatment as well.

In diabetes the usual problem is not the increased blood sugar level, but the consequences resulting from it. Excessive levels of glucose will produce unacceptable sugar deposits in numerous structures of the organism ranging from the red blood cells to the cell membranes to the blood circulation system.

Intellectual activity, that is the ability to use the brain, can be impaired considerably by such damage to small blood vessels. Even the larger vessels such as the aorta, the heart arteries, and especially the neck’s carotid artery whose correct bilateral function is indispensable for the blood supply to the brain, as well as the arteries in the pelvis and legs, are especially affected by diabetes.

The kidneys are the organs most endangered by diabetes on a long-term basis. The glomeruli which, in principal, constitute a small vascular bundle are slowly destroyed by the burden of glucose. It is a diabetic’s fate to frequently suffer kidney failure and to be connected to a dialysis machine. We have observed in 24 years of administering calcium-AEP, especially in MS patients, that diabetic retinopathy will practically not occur in diabetics. Having collaborated with several ophthalmologists we are now certain that this therapy is extremely effective in retaining the function of the retina.

The kidneys as well are apparently protected in a manner unimaginable up to now with the administration of calcium-AEP (especially when taken with magnesium orotate) to both the diabetic and the patient with high blood pressure whose kidneys are also at risk. It is interesting that apparently there is not only a protective function, but initial forms of diabetic kidney damage demonstrated by high blood pressure and loss of protein in the urine, will disappear after a while when patients take Membrane Integrity Complex. In principle, this tendency is easy to monitor and control by observing blood pressure and urinalysis.

Good Result against Diabetes
Membrane Complex (MC) has produced good results in treating Insulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), as well as Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes and their complications. Treatment with MI results in lowered insulin requirements and in reduced sugar excretion. Its therapeutic effect on diabetics is partly due to its inhibiting pancreatic autoimmune disorders where it may seal the pancreatic islet cells against immune aggression.

Diabetes is not a problem of reduced insulin production, but rather insulin resistance and an inability to transport glucose into cells. In diabetes, glycosylated albumin may increase the incidence of thrombotic events and atherosclerosis. In such cases, eating excess carbohydrates causes an abnormal rise in blood sugar. If, on the other hand, the individual does not eat, hypoglycemia may result. When Diabetic patients are treated with MI, this abnormality practically disappears, because glucose transport into cells is restored.

Diabetic Complications
In diabetes the problem is not jut the increase in blood sugar, but the consequences of exposure to both elevated blood sugar and elevated insulin over the course of a lifetime. Elevated glucose levels produce toxic metabolites that are deposited in and damage numerous structures of the body ranging from the red blood hemoglobin to the cell membranes of blood vessels. This effect leads to degenerative problems in 20-30 years. MC is beneficial in preventing and treating the complications of diabetes. It seals the cell membrane that prevents toxic glucose metabolites from entering and damaging the cells.

In the United States, diabetes is the second most frequent cause of blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the small vessels in the retina as a consequence of sugar deposits in the cell membranes. In talking about AEP’s effectiveness in patients with diabetes Dr. Nieper discussed that it seals the arteries of the retina protecting them from damage. Diabetic retinopathy has been prevented and reversed by treatment with the Membrane Integrity Complex.

What are some of the causes of a chronic infection and its associated metal retention?
When it comes to bacteria we may have been exposed to streptococci while in the womb.
